The Art of Teaching Art

The last twelve weeks have been interesting to say the least. I have a difficult time finding projects that entertain and challenge the eighth graders. After about four projects with average to minimal interest I gave up. It is frustrating to create projects for students who aren't interested. I had hit a brick wall. As I looked at my lesson planning sheet an "aha" moment occurred. I would let them do the planning. If the eighth graders planned their own lessons they might be more excited about working on them.

The students spent over 3 days researching to find the project of their choice. They were instructed about what a teacher goes through when lesson planning. Once they wrote out the plan and got approval they began the designing and creating process. It was a little hectic, but for the most part everyone was happy. This minimized behavior and sent creativity skyrocketing in the art room.
